Can we drop the pointless social bookmarking links?

I just don’t really see the point, if someone is going to add you to Facebook or Stumble you, they are likely to do it anyway. Especially when most of these things have a toolbar addon or Firefox extension that someone is going to have open.

Now granted I do see the point in using digg Digg, or back me Back me, get those on your blog nice and big at the bottom of each post, but the rest just becomes background noise, with everyone having the same it is a bit pointless. Let’s take a look at what some of the big players in the sector are up to with their social bookmarking links.

Matt Wood’s Existem blog:

Matt Wood's Existem Blog

I couldn’t even tell you what half of those things are on Matt’s blog, let alone decide to add his post about an Elvis mug to them! :)

Kieron’s here.org.uk blog:

Kieron's Blog

Now Kieron I think is really missing a trick, you have to click a random green button, even to get the pop-up above, if he dropped that, added a digg button and an affiliates4u back button, he’d be sorted and get plenty of people at least backing him. If he is getting traffic from another source just add another button, three decent buttons that work must be better than up to 14 little ones that don’t (and are hidden prior to a click).

Even the BBC are at it, what is the point, they even know they have to explain to people what on earth they are. Email to a friend and Printbable version are sensible though:

BBC Social

The nearly rans

John Lamerton’s blog is nice and clean but could do with a back me button, same goes for Kirsty’s Affiliate Stuff.

Thumbs UP

Who is doing it well?

Keep it nice and simple just have a clear back me button and be done with it, check out Fraser’s affiliate blog, nice and simple, nice and easy to do, Jason’s One Little Duck looks great and Shane’s is good too.

I really don’t think I am wrong about this, but please I’d love to be proved wrong, so you can slap this post at affiliates4u and I encourage you to do so if you have ever social bookmarked an affiliate blog you have been to, using one of the bookmarking links I’ve shown above, that wasn’t your own!

If you want to download and install the affiliates4u back me plugin for your own blog, the code is here.

Now there isn’t a slap me plugin available?! so you’ll have to head on over to affilates4u to slap this post Slap me. But if you agree with me, feel free to back me below, lets clear the clutter on the blogs!

PS. You don’t know how tempted I was after all this, to enable a social bookmarking plugin at the foot of this post, just for a laugh! :)

Yeah I agree, they are pointless and I never click on anything other than the A4U back button when it comes to Affiliate Blogs, so I have removed everything from both http://www.affiliatemarketingblog.co.uk/ and http://blog.paidonresults.com/ see people do read your blog and take action, now where is the share with Facebook button so I can tell me friends about it ;)

Yea i kinda agree with most of that. The existem bookmarks on our blogs were a bit of a hashed together wordpress plugin hack i put on there quickly to serve a purpose, been wanting to change that for a while. Should hopefully get the whole site upgraded somewhat over the next few months
